Spending in Japan by inbound travelers increased by 28% to 2.3 trillion yen for the first three months of 2025

Japan Tourism Agency announced that spending by inbound travelers for the first three months of 2025 increased by 28.4% year on year to 2.3 trillion yen. By nationality and region, China topped the list with 544.3 billion yen (24.0% of total), followed by Taiwan with 316.8 billion yen (13.9%), South Korea with 282.4 billion yen (12.4%), the United States with 218.8 billion yen (9.6%), and Hong Kong with 153.4 billion yen (6.8%).

Spending per person was estimated at 222,000 yen, 5.2% more than a year ago. By nationality, the top was Australia at 367,000 yen per person, followed by France at 338,000 yen per person and U.K. at 321,000 yen per person. 

The most-spent category was accommodation at 758.5 billion yen (33.4% of total), followed by shopping at 66.1 billion yen (29.3%) and eating and drinking at 511.9 billion yen (22.5%). 

For tourism and leisure, Australia had the highest accommodation costs per person at 161,000 yen. China had the highest shopping costs per person at 106,000 yen.
