85% of travel and hospitality business operators in Japan are forced to limit their operation hours due to labour shortage

The Japan Federation of Service & Tourism Industries Workers' Unions (STU) announced as the survey results to member unions. that 85% of travel and hospitality business operators were forced to limit their operation hours due to labour shortage.

The survey finds that the hospitality industry has struggled with their operations, such as reduce in operation days (51%), shorter operation hours (33%) or reduce in rooms for sale (27%). Also, 80% of hotels or ryokans have increased part-time workers or spare-time workers. 

Major reasons for leaving the hospitality businesses are ‘low salary (88.6%),’ ‘working environment (54.3%),’ ‘long-time working (40%)’ or ‘low potentiality of the company (31.4%).’ 

Hostel and ryokans are looking for customer service and restaurant staff especially.
