Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported that the number of Japanese outbound travelers was down 52.1% to 9,624,100 in 2023 compared to 2019, though the result was about 3.5 times more than 2022. Depreciation of yen and global inflation continued discouraging Japanese people to go abroad for leisure.
In December 2023, the number was down 44.6% over 2019 or up 19.3% over 2022 to 947,900.
According to OAG, international flights departing from six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) were down 15.4% to 18,823, and available seats down 14.8% to 4.41 million compared to December 2019,.Double-digit growths in both flights and seats were seen in Haneda (4,391 flights and 1,065,487 seats) and Fukuoka (1,799 flights and 362,376382,127 seats).
