Japanese travel consumption in Japan increased by 2.5% to 20.9 trillion JPY in 2016

The latest Japan Tourism Agency survey finds that Japanese travel consumption in Japan in 2016 preliminarily increased by 2.5% year on year to 20.9 trillion JPY, which roughly consisted of 16 trillion JPY for overnight trips (+0.4%) and 5 trillion JPY for day trips (+9.8%).

Japanese travelers in Japan totaled 635 million (+5.0%), which were broken down into 322 million overnight travelers (+2.8%) and 313 million day travelers (+2.8%).

The table below shows changes of Japanese travel consumption in Japan in the past six years:

Travel unit price per capita was down 2.4% to 32,945 JPY. Overnight travel unit price per capita was down 2.4% to 49,326 JPY, and day traveler up 2.3% to 16,120 JPY.

For the fourth quarter of 2016 (October to December), Japanese travel consumption in Japan was down 1.6% year on year to 5 trillion JPY, which roughly consisted of 3.7 trillion JPY for overnight travels (-4.6%) and 1.2 trillion JPY for day travels (+8.7%).
