The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)’s statistics in September 2016 finds that Japan received 522,300 visitors from China (+6.3%), 130,900 from Hong Kong (+13.6%), 430,600 from Korea (+42.8%) and 347,500 from Taiwan (+14.7%). Visitors from all of the markets were record-high for September. Chinese travelers reached more than 5 million in the first nine months of 2016, exceeding the last year’s total result.
The table below shows changes of visitors from Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong in the last 12 months:
JNTO analyzed that the growth of Korean travelers mainly resulted from a local holiday season and extension of the air network. The Chinese market was affected by cancellations of several cruise ships due to typhoons. Extension of the air networks contributed to growth of visitors from Taiwan and Hong Kong as well.
