Tokyo Shoko Research announced that the number of newly launched travel or accommodation businesses in 2023 increased by 59% year on year to 1,560, not reaching 1,621 in 2019 before the pandemic but more than 1,500 for the first time in the past four years and the second most launches in the last decade,
Tokyo Shoko Research said that the increase resulted from growths of domestic and inbound travel markets after the pandemic.
Launches of travel businesses doubled to 520, more than 477 in 2019, and an increase in launches in major urban areas or popular tourist destinations, such as 176 in Tokyo, 78 in Osaka, 30 in Hokkaido or 19 in Okinawa. No launch was not seen in Yamagata, Tochigi, Wakayama, Tottori and Yamaguchi.
Launches of accommodation businesses increased by 46.8% to 1,040 nationwide. New launches were found in all 47 prefectures, such as 296 in Tokyo, 116 in Osaka, 55 in Hokkaido, 52 in Nagano or 49 in Okinawa. Tokyo Shoko Research said that more new launches were found in snow resort destinations particularly preferred by inbound travelers partially because Japan Tourism Agency supports creation of internationally-competitive snow resorts.
