Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of Japanese travel consumption was up 11.8% year on year to 4.6 trillion JPY in the 1st quarter of 2024 (January to March 2024), which were also up 13% more consumption than the same period of 2019. The total consisted of 3.8 trillion JPY for overnight trips (up 16.0% over 2019) and 99 million JPY for day trips (up 2.9% over 2019).
The total number of Japanese travelers in Japan was up 9.6% year on year to 111 million, which were 7.8% fewer travelers than 2019. Overnight travelers were up 2.5% to 61 million (down 4.7% over 2019), and day travelers were up 19.7% to 50.4 million (down 11.2% over 2019).
Travel spending a travel per traveler was up 2.0% year on year to 42,706JPY, which were also 22.5% more than even 2019. It was up 6.1% to 61,736 JPY for overnight trip (up 21.7% over 2019) and up 4.5% to 19,657 JPY for day trip (up 15.8% over 2019).
