Foreigners’ guest nights increased in other local destinations than Golden Route in Japan, according to the May 2024 statistics

The total number of foreigners’ guest nights was up 39.4% to 13.6 million in May 2024 compared to May 2019, according to the Japan Tourism Agency’s statistics. Guest nights in three major urban areas and in local areas was up 59.0% and 5.9%  to 9.76 million guest nights and to 3.81 million guest nights respectively.

By prefecture, the largest growth in comparison with May 2019 was seen in Ishikawa with 148.6% up, followed by Ehime with 114.2% up, Tokyo with 97.9% up, Fukushima with 86.9%, Kanagawa with 76.1% up, Fukuoka with 71.4% up and Hiroshima with 59.8% up. The results show an increase in foreigners’ guest nights in other destinations than so-called ‘Golden Route.’

The biggest international source market was China with 1.85 million guest nights, followed by South Korea with 1.44 million guest nights, Taiwan with1.35 million guest nights, U.S. with 1.32 million guest nights and Hong Kong  with 580,000 guest nights. Compared to May 2019, large growths are seen in Germany with 116.0% up and Canada with 111.5% up.
