Institute fir Urban Strategy of The Mori Memorial Foundation announced Global Power City Index 2024 (GPCI 2024), Social and lifestyle indicators that have been particularly affected by the COVID-19 era (airline networks, cost of living, wages, working styles, etc.) were strongly reflected in the ranking results for the six areas that make up a city's overall strength (economy, research and development, cultural interaction, livability, environment, and accessibility).
Top five cities of London, New York, Tokyo, Paris and Singapore were unchanged from the last year, but Tokyo, Paris and Singapore largely increased the scores and narrowed the gap of New York.
In Japan, Osaka ranked 35th, and Fukuoka 42nd.
Cultural interaction: Tourism contents boosted Tokyo’s ranking
In the Culture and Exchange sector, for the first time since the 2008 GPCI announcement, Tokyo ranked 3rd. Tokyo made a significant leap to 3rd in Number of Foreign Visitors, and its evaluations of Number of Luxury Hotel Rooms(12th), Nightlife Options(8th), and Tourist Attractions (11th) saw substantial improvements.
Top five cities in this category were London Paris, Tokyo, New York and Dubai. Seoul and Bangkok dropped its ranking to 16th and 18th. In Japan, Osaka and Fukuoka raised its ranking to 23rd and 45th respectively.
Accessibility: Tokyo jumped to 5th with public transportation 1st
In the accessibility sector, Tokyo raised its ranking from 8th last year to 5th. Indexes related to aviation capacity, such as "Number of domestic and international passengers" (4th) and "Number of aircraft takeoffs and landings" (7th), saw a large increase in scores. Intra-city transportation, such as “Convenient public transportation" (1st), improved.
Top five cities were London, New York, Paris, Dubai and Tokyo. Osaka ranked 32nd.
Environment: Tokyo downgraded to 18th
In the Environment sector, Tokyo dropped its ranking from 16th to 18th. The only index in which it dropped was "Cleanliness of Air" (18th), but since there were many cities that improved their ratings by small margins, Tokyo's ranking dropped relatively.
Economy: Tokyo remained 10th
In the Economy sector, Tokyo remained 10th because Tokyo remained strong indexes related to economic concentration such as "Top 500 Companies in the World" (2nd) and "Market Capitalization of Listed Stocks" (3rd), but due in part to the weak yen, its scores in "GDP" (2nd) and "GDP per capita" (18th), which used to be strong, dropped significantly.
In addition, scores for "Workplace Quality" (23rd), which now includes mobile internet speed as a new evaluation item, as well as "High Wages" (27th) and "Recruiting Talented Talent" (39th) also dropped.
Livability: Tokyo continued being 3rd, Osaka 7th
In Livability sector, Tokyo ranked 3rd, following Paris and Madrid. Indexes related to convenience of life such as "number of retail stores" (2nd) and "number of restaurants" (4th) further improved. In addition, the weak yen affected the score for "low price level". In this category, Osaka entered the top 10 at 7th place. Fukuoka is also ranked 21st.
