International visitors to Japan were record-high for 7 months in a row with 2.93 million in August 2024

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in August 2024 reached 2,933,000, 16.4% more than the same month in 2019 and 35% more than a year ago, marking record breaking for 7 months in a row.

The largest source market was China with 745,800 visitors (down 25.5% over 2019), followed by South Korea with 612,100 (up 98.3%), Taiwan with 564,300 visitors (up 34.3%), Hong Kong with 246,600 visitors (up 29.6%). U.S. with 174,000 visitors (up 47.7%).

Visitors from 17 out of 23 core source markets were record-high for August. Visitors from Italy (up 52.2% to 34,700) and Spain (up 29.4% to 25,900) were record-high on a single month basis.

According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in August 2024 decreased by 6.9% to 21,380 and available seats by 6.1% to 5,005,595 compared to August 2019. 

Haneda handled 31.6% more flights (4,765) and 25.4% more available seats (1,182,090) than August 2019. Fukuoka also increased flights by 12.2% to 1,989 and available seats by 13.7% to 414,894
