Japan Tourism Agency announced that spending in Japan by international travelers in the second quarter of 2024 increased by 68.6% to 2,1 trillion yen compared to 2019.
The top source market was China with 442 billion JPY (20.7% of the total), followed by U.S. with 278 billion JPY (13.0%), Taiwan with 264 billion JPY (12.4%), South Korea with 223 billion JPY (10.4%) and Hong Kong with 174 billion yen (8.2%).
Spending per international traveler except cruise travelers was estimated at 238,722 yen, 54% more than the same period of 2019. The highest average was seen in France with 417,536 yen per traveler, followed by U.K. with 416,647 yen and Australia with 398,722 yen. The highest growth in comparison with 2019 was found in Canada with 91.1% up. Spendings per Chinese visitor were 181,162 yen.
The most spent item was accommodation with 705.1 billion yen (33.0% of the total), followed by shopping with 664.1billion yen (31.1%) and eating and drinking with 465.5 billion yen (21.8%). Compared to the same period of 2019, the ratio of shopping was higher.
