AI suggests travel plans to avoid over-crowd in Hakone, a famous hot spring resort in Japan, developed by a local DMO and University of Tokyo

AI-based travel planning service ‘Hako Tabi’ is available in Hakone, a famous onsen resort in Japan, as one of the solutions to resolve over-tourism. The service is developed by a University of Tokyo startup ‘EasyX’ and local Hakone DMO and adopted by Kanagawa Prefecture for the open innovation promotion program ‘BAK2024.’

‘Hako Tabi’ is a free service to suggest multiple travel itineraries meeting your needs when you input age, destinations, date and time and interests, such as foods, onsen or art. Combination of EasyX’s data analysis and AI technology with tourist data provided by Hakone DMO allows Hako Tabi to guide travel plans to avoid over-crowd.

Hakone has been in trouble with reduction in visitors’ satisfactions particularly due to traffic jam for a long time.
