Airbnb increases senior hosts in Japan, particularly 60 years old or older by 235%

The Airbnb’s demography survey in 40 countries including Japan finds that senior hosts have recently been increasing in Japan. In 2015, 40 years old or older hosts doubled year on year, and 60 years old or older hosts increased by 234% to about 900, out of which 36% are retired persons or unemployed persons, and about 30% became hosts to have an alternative revenue source.

One of the characteristics in Japan is that local cities with fewer hosts have more senior hosts than major cities. In cities with 100 or fewer hosts, the ratio of senior hosts is 39%, much higher than 16% of 18 to 30 years old. Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, part of the UNESCO World Heritage area, has the most senior hosts in Japan.

Interestingly, about 70% of all senior hosts acquire the highest grade of five stars, and the ratio of super hosts among senior hosts is 17%, higher than the world average of 7%.
