Asia-Pacific Institute of Research (APIR) estimated spending by visitors to EXPO 2025 Osaka Kansai at 891.3 billion JPY in a basic case, 13.3% more than the previous calculation, while expenses on the EXPO is expected to increase by 23.4% to 727.5 billion JPY.
Spendings by a visitor are estimated at 24,256 JPY a domestic day traveler, 34,538 JPY an domestic overnight traveler and 18,911 JPY a foreign traveler.
Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition has forecasted about 15.6 million visitors from Kansai area, about 9.1 million visitors from other areas in Japan and about 3.5 million visitors from foreign countries or regions, totaling 282 million visitors during the term (154,000 visitors a day on average).
The estimated 891.3 billion JPY in a basic case consist of 224 billion JPY for transportation, 173.5 billion JPY for accommodation, 161.9 billion JPY for drinking and eating, 186.7 billion JPY for shopping and 145 billion JPY for entertainment.
Also, the total estimation comprises 378.4 billion JPY by domestic day travelers, 314.3 billion JPY by domestic overnight travelers and 198.6 billion JPY by foreign travelers.
Simulation of the extension cases
In an extension case I, which simulates increases in overnights, APIR estimated the total spending at 1,165 billion JPY, comprising 275.4 billion JPY for transportation, 324.3 billion JPY for accommodation, 209.6 billion JPY for drinking and eating, 186.7 billion JPY for shopping and 169.3 billion JPY for entertainment. Spending is also expected to increase to 503.1 billion JPY by domestic overnight travelers and to 283.9 billion JPY by foreign travelers.
In an extension case II, which simulates increases in both overnights and day travels, the total spending is estimated at 1,241 billion JPY, comprising 299.7 billion JPY for transportation, 324.3 billion JPY for accommodation, 222.9 billion JPY for drinking and eating, 205.6 billion JPY for shopping and 188.6 billion JPY for entertainment. Spending by day travelers is expected to total 454.1 billion JPY.
