Foreigners’ guest nights in Japan were up 17% in April 2024 compared to pre-pandemic

Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of guest nights in April 2024 (provisionally) was up 11.9% year on year to 50.9 million, which were also up 0.5% compared to the same month of 2019. Guest nights of Japanese travelers was down 4.1% to 37.8 million over April 2019, while guest nights of foreigner travelers were up 16.5% to 13.2 million.

The occupancy rate was 57.3% overall, 7.7 lower higher points than April 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 33.0% for ryokans, 50.5% for resort hotels, 73.7% for budget hotels and 73.1% for city hotel.

In March 2024 (definitely), the total number of foreigners’ guest nights was up 72.0% year on year to 13 million. The growth rates in three major urban areas and in local areas was up 53.7% and 6.5% respectively compared to the same month of 2019.

By prefecture, the largest growth in comparison with April 2019 was seen in Ishikawa with 137.9% up, and large growths were seen in Miyagi with 98.2% up, Tokyo with 93.5% up, Hiroshima with 70.7% up and Ehime with 68.0% up.

The biggest international source market was Taiwan with1.42 million guest nights, followed by China with 1.36 million guest nights, U.S. with 1.35 million guest nights, South Korea with 1.34 million guest nights) and  Hong Kong  with 639,000 guest nights, all of which accounted for 56.4% of the total. The hight growths were seen in Australia with 124.9% up.
