Japan Tourism Agency announced that the number of Japanese guest nights was up 24.1% to 19.3 million in June 2021 (preliminary report) compared to March 2020, but still down 46.6% compared to June 2019. International guest nights were just 260,000, 97.3% fewer nights than two years ago.
The average occupancy rate was 28.7%, slightly better than 26.8% in May. The rates of all accommodation types remained low: 15.4% for ryokan, 18.8% for resort hotel, 28.9% for budget hotel and 28.9% for city hotel.
By prefecture, the highest occupancy rate was found in Shimane with 47.2%, while the lowest occupancy rate was 14.1 in Kyoto, followed by 16% in Osaka and 18.7% in Nara. The most guest nights were 2.29 million in Tokyo, followed by 1.22 million in Hokkaido and 1.1 million in Shizuoka.
