Japan Tourism Agency announced that Japanese travel consumption for domestic travel was up 7.0% year on year to 21.9 trillion JPY in 2019, which consisted of 17.1 trillion JPY for overnight travels (+8.5%) and 4.8 trillion JPY for day travels (+1.8%).
The total number of domestic travelers was up 4.4% to 587 million, comprising 311 million overnight travelers (+7.0%) and 275 million day travelers (+1.7%). Travel spending a travel a traveler was 37,349 JPY (+2.4%) on average, 55.069 JPY an overnight travel (+1.4%) and 17,301 JPY a day travel (+0.1%).
In the fourth quarter of 2019 (October to December), Japanese travel consumption amounted to 5 trillion JPY (+9.6%), which consisted of 3.9 trillion JPY for overnight travels (+13.5%) and 1 trillion JPY for day travels (-2.4%).
Consumptions for overnight travels increased year on year in all of the three months (+10.3% in October +12.9% in November and +5.8% in December).
The number of domestic travelers in the quarter totaled 132 million (+6.4%), comprising 68.7 million overnight travelers (+8.7%) and 63.8 million day travelers (+3.9%). Travel spending a travel a traveler was 37,854 JPY (+3.0%) on average, 57,008 JPY an overnight travel (+4.3%) and 17,226 JPY a day travel (-6.1%).
