Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of tourism spending in Japan by international visitors increased by 69.2% to record-high 8.1 trillion yen compared to 2019. Spending per visitor was up 43.3% to 227,000 yen.
By market, the top was China with 1.7 trillion yen (21.3% of the total), followed by Taiwan with 1 trillion yen (13.4%), South Korea with 963 billion yen (11.8%), U.S. with 902 billion yen (11.1%) and Hong Kong with 658 billion yen (8.1%). The share of the top five accounted for 65.7% of the total.
Spending by Chinese visitors largely increased from 760 billion yen in 2023.
By category, the top share was 33.6% for accommodation, followed by 29.5% for shopping and 21.5% for eating and drinking. Compared to 2023, the share of shopping rose by 3.0%.
By market, the most spending was seen in U.K. with 383,000 yen per visitor, followed by Australia with 382,000 yen per visitor and Spain with 370,000 yen per visitor.
More spendings for accommodation were seen among visitors from long-haul markets, like more than 170,000 yen in U.K. or more than 160,000 yen in Australia. When it comes to shopping, China was top with 119,000 yen.
