Japanese travel companies still suffered from 72.8% less sales in July 2021 than two years ago

Japan Tourism Agency announced that sales of 46 major travel companies increased by 214.6% year on year to 111.6 billion JPY in total in July 2021, but the result was still 72.8% lower than July 2019.

Sales in inbound travel were largely up 2883.2% year on year to 27.6 billion JPY, which were up 155.1% even compared to two years ago, because of high demands for Tokyo Olympics. 

Sales in domestic travel were up 160.1% year on year to 78.7 billion JPY, but were down 65.3% over two years ago. Sales in overseas travel were up 278.5% to 5.3 billion JPY (down 96.8% over two years ago).

Sales of package tour products for domestic travel were down 78.2% to 17.7 billion JPY compared to July 2019, and customers were also down 79.5% to 543,908.

Among 46 travel companies, the top was JTB Group (9 companies) with sales of 62.9 billion JPY (down 55% over two year ago). HIS (six companies) reduced sales by 94.8% to 2 billion JPY compared to two years ago because it largely relies on the overseas travel business.
