International visitors to Japan exceeded 3 million in March 2024, the record-breaking single month result in the history

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in March 2024 was up 11.6% to 3,081,600 compared to the same month of 2019, which were record-high on a single month, boosted by cherry blossom and the Easter break.

The largest source market was South Korea with 663,100 visitors (up 13.2% over 2019), followed by Taiwan with 484,400 visitors (up 20.4%), China with 452,400 (down 34.6%), U.S. with 201,000 visitors (up 64.3%) and Hong Kong with 231,400 visitors (up 35.0%). 

Visitors from 17 out of 23 core markets were record-high for March, such as Philippines with 78,800 visitors (up 63.2%) or Australia with 82,800 visitors (up 87.4%), and visitors from U.S. and U.K. with 56,400 broke the previous records on a single month basis. 

According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in March 2024 9.2% decreased by 9.2% to 19,664, and available seats by 7.6% to 4,631,651 compared to March 2019. 

Haneda handled 24.0% more flights (4,488) and 19.0% more available seats (1,105,173) than March 2019.
