A lifestyle survey, conducted by International market research company Euromonitor in 39 countries, finds that Japan has the highest percentage of people who performed ‘solo travel.’
In response to the question of "Who do you travel with when you go on vacation?", the percentage of people who answered "I often travel alone" was 7.2%, the lowest number of responses worldwide. In Japan, however, 19.2%, about one in five people, chose ‘solo travel.’
The survey results also show that the percentage of people who answered ‘solo travel’ in Japan has almost doubled in five years from 10.4% in 2019.

By gender of Japanese responders, 13.5% of women and 24.2% of men answered ‘I often travel alone.’ By generation, 24.6% of people aged 30 to 44 answered ‘I often travel alone,’ the highest of all generations.
In addition, when visitors to Japan from the Asia-Pacific region were asked what they consider important when deciding on a travel destination, the top answer was ‘a place to relax,’ followed by ‘a place to enjoy good food, ‘ ‘a place with nature or adventure activities’ and ‘a place to enjoy local cultures.’ Meanwhile, only 10% answered ‘shopping.’
Regarding comfortable communication with brands or business operators, 48.9% answered that they prefer to communication in person for customer services, much higher than the percentage of communication with chatbot.
