Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of Japanese travel consumption was down 8.5% year on year to 9.1 trillion JPY in 2021, which were 58.4% less than 2019. The total consisted of 6.9 trillion JPY for overnight trips (down 11% over 2020 or down 59.7% over 2019) and 2.2 trillion JPY for day trips (up 0.2% over 2020 or down 53.8% over 2019).

The total number of travelers was down 9.0% year on year to 267 million, which were 54.5% fewer than 2019. Overnight travelers were down 12% to 141 million (down 54.6% over 2019), and day travelers were down 5.3% to 126 million (down 54.4% over 2019).
Travel spending a traveler was up 0.5% year on year to 34,148 JPY (down 8.6% over 2019). It was up 1.1% to 48,876 JPY for overnight trip (down 11.2% over 2019) and up 5.9% to 17,564 JPY for day trip (up 1.3% over 2019).
For the last three months after October 2021, when declaration of a state of emergency was lifted, travel consumption was up 20.2% year on year to 3.3 trillion JPY, which comprised 2.6 trillion JPY for overnight trip (up 15.8% over 2020) and 73.9 million JPY (up 38.6% over 2020). Travelers totaled 88.6 million, up 14.1% over 2020.
