The latest Euromonitor International survey finds that online sales of travel-related products in Japan amounted to record-high 4.7 trillion yen, surpassing 4.5 trillion yen in 2019 before the pandemic. The amount dropped to 1.6 trillion yen in 2021 because of the travel restrictions during the pandemic.
Euromonitor has forecasted that the amount will increase by 10% year on year to 5.2 trillion yen in 2024.
The most-spent product was lodging at 1.71 trillion yen, followed by air ticket at 1.67 trillion yen, package tour at 839 billion yen, ground transportation at 302.4 billion yen, activity and tourism attraction at 111.2 billion yen, rent-a-car at 29.3 billion yen and cruise at 2 billion yen.
Online sales of travel-related products in the whole world almost doubled in the past six years, while the growth has relatively been slow in Japan. Euromonitor has forecasted that online sales of travel-related products in Japan will grow to 5.5 trillion yen in 2025, 5.8 trillion yen in 2026, 6.2 trillion yen in 2027 and 6.4 trillion yen in 2028.
Euromonitor analyzed that the low growth in Japan may result from higher awareness to privacy policy and the high ratio of elderly people.
