Mitsubishi Research Institute recently conducted the Kansai Inbound Marketing Basic Survey targeting international visitors arriving at Kansai International Airport, working with JR West, Kintetsu Railway, Hankyu-Hanshin Holdings, Nankai Railway, Keihan Holdings, and Kansai Airport.
According to this survey, the most popular area in the Kansai region is Nanba/Shinsaibashi (Osaka City). 7.02 million international travelers (about 30% of the total) visited it last year. In Kyoto, the most popular area was Higashiyama, which attracted 4.8 million international visitors.
This survey also reveals that 14.34 million international travelers traveled between Osaka and Kyoto, and that 57.96 million international travelers traveled inside Osaka Prefecture.
The average length of a stay in Japan was less than a week for the visitors from East Asia but 9-13 days for the visitors from the U.S.A., Europe, and Australia (staying in Osaka for 4-5 days).
This survey targeted visitors from the U.S.A., China, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Europe, Thailand, ASEAN (except Thailand), and Australia in February and July 2017; it investigated the awareness about tourist places in Kansai, visiting experiences, willingness to visit again, traveling routes, transportation and accommodation. 4,000 international travelers departing from Kansai International Airport participated.
