The survey on inbound travelers’ trends, jointly performed by Japan Travel Bureau Foundation (JTBF) and Development Bank of Japan (DBJ), finds that the ratios of ‘hope to visit Japan for Tokyo Olympic 2020’ are 28% in Asia and 24% in Europe, U.S. and Australia. Including answers of ‘somewhat hope to visit Japan for Tokyo Olympic 2020,’ the ratios rise to 62% in Asia and 50% in Europe, U.S. and Australia.
Among people who hope to visit Japan for Tokyo Olympic 2020, the ratios of those who want to visit local areas in Japan are 54% in Asia and 49% in Europe, U.S. and Australia, and including answers of ‘somewhat hope to visit local areas,’ the ratios skyrocket to 96% in Asia and 92% in Europe, U.S. and Australia.
The survey also illustrates a gap between intention and experiences in terms of staying in ryokan with onsen. The ratios of people who intend to stay in ryokan with onsen are 74% in Asia and 55% in Europe, U.S. and Australia, but the ratios of people who experiences to do drop to 53% in Asia and 25% in Europe, U.S. and Australia.
In addition, the survey shows that spending to ryokan is lower than spending to western-style luxury hotel. The ratios of staying in ryokan with accommodation rate between $200 and $500 a night are 41% in Asia and 48% in Europe, U.S. and Australia, while the ratios of staying in western-style luxury hotel in the same rate category are 54% in Asia and 71% in Europe, U.S. and Australia. The gap is particularly large in the accommodation rate between $400 and $500.
The online survey was conducted to 20 to 59 years old overseas travel experiences in South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, U.S., Australia, U.K. and France in the period between June 25 and July 8 2019.
