The recent booking.com survey on sustainable travel, targeting more than 33,000 travelers in 35 countries and regions, finds that 56% of all Japanese respondents (76% globally) said that they want to do more sustainable travel in the next year. 80% said that sustainable travel is important to themselves.
75% of all Japanese respondents (76% globally) concerned about rise in living costs, and 43% (49% globally) answered that sustainable travel is costly. 43% globally said that they do not care about additional cost for sustainable travel, but the ratio was just 22% among Japanese travelers.
54% of all Japanese respondents and 51% globally said that options of sustainable travel are not enough for them to choose. 53% of them and 74% globally said that they want travel companies to provide more sustainable travel options.
Regarding choice of accommodation, 35% of all Japanese respondents and 59% globally said that they want to search certified accommodations first in the next booking opportunities.
Booking.com launched ‘Sustainable Travel Badge’ for accommodation partners in 2021 in cooperation with Travalyst. A partner is awarded a certificate badge, depending on achievements of 32 criteria. The badges have been awarded to more than 570,000 accommodations globally and 6,678 accommodations in Japan out of all listed 28 million accommodations on the booking site.
