A notable increase in international guest nights in local regions in Japan was seen in January 2025

Japan Tourism Agency reported that international guest nights in January 2025 were up 34.8% year on year to 15.2 million, which accounted for 31% of the total including Japanese guest nights. The monthly growth rate was higher than 22.9% in December 2024.

The total of international guests consisted of 9.4 million in three major urban areas with a share of 61.9% and 5.8 million in local regions with a share of 38.1%. Compared to a year ago, the growth rate in local regions was 49.2%, higher than 27.3% in three major urban areas.

By prefecture, the highest growth was seen in Kagawa with 135.4% up to 74,760 guest nights, followed by Tokushima with 123.4% up to 14,210 guest nights and Toyama with 123.3% up to 21,930 guest nights.

Tokyo increased international guest nights by 26.4% to 4.7 million, which were the most guest nights nationwide. The 2nd was Osaka with 23.3% up to 2.2 million guest nights. 

Top five source markets were China with 3.4 million guest nights, Taiwan with 2 million guest nights, South Korea with 1.9 million guest nights, U.S. with 930,000 guest nights and Australia with 810,000 guest nights. Large growth rates were seen in China with 137.5% up, Russia with 70.8% up and Malaysia with 67.5% up.
