Eight railway companies of Keisei, Keihin, Shin-Keisei, Seibu, Tokyo Monorail, Tobu, JR East and Hokuso will transfer the current magnetic ticket to QR-code ticket on the companies-cross system step by step after 2026.
The new system will allow a passenger to pass through a gate by tapping a QR-code ticket on the gate machine, instead of injecting a magnetic ticket into the gate machine currently.
They has judged that the ticketing system should be upgraded for sustainable operation in the future because the automatic gate and ticket machine system is complex and costly to sustain the operation. Also, the magnetic ticket is not environment-friendly on the recycling process because it contains metal.
Data of QR-code ticket and gate usage can be managed on the companies-cross server, which enables the eight railways to sell a common ticket.
The new ticketing system is expected to be extended to the railways.
