Expedia Japan revealed that accommodation bookings in Japan by inbound travelers on Expedia and Hotels,com for Q3 of 2023 were up 310% year on year. The top source market was U.S., followed by South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada, Australia, Singapore, U.K., France and ThaiExpedia Japan says the most bookings for Japan are seen in U.S., and as a whole Shinjyuku is particularly preferred as an area to stay.
U.S. was also top in the average ADR, followed by Australia, Singapore, U.K., France , Canada, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Travelers to Japan from U.S. or Europe tend to stay in Japan 2.5 to 3 times longer than in other Asian countries, according to Expedia.
As the most selected area to stay in Tokyo, Shinjyuku was top in eight out of 10 countries and regions. Expedia analyzed that Shinjyuku is a well-balance area in access, a variety of hotels, shopping or foods. Asakusa was top for travelers from Taiwan, and Ueno for Thai travelers.
Meanwhile, bookings by Japanese outbound travelers remained a 70% increase for Q3 of 2023. Expedia said that regular outbound travelers came back first, but as a whole, demand recovery is still slow.
The most-booked city was Seoul, followed by Bangkok, Taipei, Paris, Singapore, Los Angeles, London, Honolulu and Ho Chi Minh.
The highest growth rate between Q2 and Q3 was seen in Guam with 40% up, followed by Sydney with 25% up, Hanoi with 25% up, Jakarta with 25% up and Hong Kong with 25% up. Expedia analyzed that the growths resulted from increases in flights for the destinations.
The most-searched city for this coming New Year holiday period was Taipei, followed by Honolulu, Seoul, Bangkok, Taiwan except Taipei, Singapore, Guam, Paris, Bali and Phuket.
