Japan Tourism Agency announced guest night statistics in Japan in September 2016 (the secondary report) and in October 2016 (the first report). Guest nights in September 2016 reduced by 6.0% year on year to 41.4 million in total and increased by 0.3% to 45.1 million in total in October 2016.
The total in September 2016 consisted of 36.2 million guest nights by Japanese (-7.3%) and 5.2 million guest nights by international visitors (+3.7%). In October 2016, guest nights by Japanese are expected to reduce by 0.3% to 38.7 million, and international visitors to increase by 4.4% to 63.5 million.
The occupancy rates were 62.0% in September and 65.0% in October. In September, prefectures with the occupancy rate of 80% or higher were 12 for city hotels, nine for budget hotels and three for resort hotels.
The occupancy rate in Osaka was still high with 95.6% for resort hotels, 88.2% for city hotels and 81.9% for budget hotels. Kyoto had the highest rates of 89.7% for city hotels and 85.8% for budget hotels. In Kyushu, the occupancy rate was 61.2% in September, 1.1 higher points than a year ago.
