Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in January 2025 was up 40.6% year on year to 3,781,200, breaking the single-month record for two months in a row. The result was about 2.5 times more visitors than two years ago.
The largest source market was China with 980,300 (up 135.6% year on year), followed by South Korea with 967,100 visitors (up 12.8%), Taiwan with 593,400 visitors (up 20.5%), U.S. with 182,500 visitors (up 38.4%) and Hong Kong with 243,700 visitors (up 30.8%).
Visitors from South Korea, Taiwan and Australia (up 35.3% to 140,200) were record-high on a single month basis, and those from 17 markets were record-high for January. Visitors from 22 out of major 23 markets, except Thailand, resulted in double-digit growths.
JNTO analyzed that the large growth mainly resulted from shift of Chinese New Year holidays from February last year to January and higher demands of winter sports in U.S. and Australia markets.
The following graphs show international arrivals by month and by source market.
