Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in January 2024 was 2,688,1000, almost the same number as 2,689,339 in January 2019.
According to JNTO, cancellations were partially found in East Asia due to Noto Peninsula earthquake, but visitors from South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia, U.S., Canada, Mexico and Middle East reached record-high for January. Visitors from South Korea, Taiwan and Australia were record-high on a single month basis.
The largest source market continued to be South Korea with 857,000 visitors (up 10% over 2019), followed by Taiwan with 492,300 visitors (up 27.0%), China with 415,900 (down 44.9%), Hong Kong with 186,300 visitors (up 20.7%) and U.S. with 131,800 visitors (up 27.7%).
The large growths in comparison with 2019 were particularly seen in Singapore with 50.4% up, Canada with 42.2% up and Australia with 27.8% up.
According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in January 2024 recovered to a 9.3% decrease (19,299 flights), and available seats to a 7.1% reduction (4.52 million seats) compared to January 2019.
Haneda handled 25.6% more flights (4,462) and 19.3% more available seats (1,081,575) than January 2019.
