International visitors to Japan reached record-high 3.13 million in June 2024, exceeding 3 million for four consecutive months

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in June 2024 reached record-high 3,135,600 on a single month basis, increasing by 8.9% compared to the same month of 2019. Exceeding 3 million visitors for four consecutive months, the total for the first half of 2024 was up 6.9% to record-high 17,777,200, about 1 million more visitors than the same period of 2019.

The largest source market was South Korea with 703,300 visitors (up 14.9% over 2019), followed by China with 660,900 (down 25.0%), Taiwan with 574,500 visitors (up 24.6%), U.S. with 296,400 visitors (up 68.9%) and Hong Kong with 250,600 visitors (up 19.9%). Visitors from Taiwan and U.S. were record-high on a single month basis.

Visitors from 18 out of 23 core source markets were record-high for June such as South Korea, Vietnam with 47,400 visitors and Australia with 61,800 visitors.

On the contrary, visitors from Thailand and Malaysia saw double-digit reductions probably because visa waiver for the countries by China has encouraged tourists to visit China, JNTO said.

According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in June 2024 decreased by 8.3% to 19,635 and available seats by 5.9% to 4,594,737 compared to June 2019.

Haneda handled 29.1% more flights (4,524) and 23.3% more available seats (1,116,898) than June 2019. Fukuoka also increased flights by 10% to 1,833 and available seats by 17.1% to 393,833.
