Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported that international conventions in Japan in 2015 were up 9.9% year on year to record-high 2,847, growing every year since 2012. Participants, however, reduced from 1,996,000 in 2014 to 1,767,000 in 2015 because of more small-scale conventions.
Conventions with 50 or more participants were subject to the JNTO survey. The city with the most conventions was Tokyo with 557 (543 in 2014), followed by Fukuoka with 363 (336 in 2014) and Sendai with 221 (80 in 2014). The large increase in Sendai resulted from many conventions related to the third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.
