Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida ordered at the 16th Tourism Promotion Cabinet Meeting on October 11 2022 that a new Tourism Promotion Plan as a public-private strategy should be drawn up by the end of March next year, especially eying Osaka Kansai EXPO in 2025.
He said, “To overcome damages from COVID-19 and build sustainable local economies, a public-private tourism strategy for the future tourism-oriented country will be needed.”
In 2019 before the pandemic, the inbound travel market had rapidly grown to 32 million international visitors and to about 4.8 trillion JPY in spending.
Kishida said at the meeting that the government is trying to reach 5 trillion JPY in spending as soon as possible through an intensive policy package and also taking advantage of weaker Yen. Also, he promised the government’s supports to the lodging renovation program for a higher-valued and more sustainable tourism industry.
