The latest guest night statistics in Japan in January 2017 (the secondary report), announced by Japan Tourism Agency, finds that guest nights increased by 0.8% year on year to 36.1 million in total, which was the record-high result for January. The total consisted of 29.9 million guest nights by Japanese travelers (-0.5%) and 6.2 million guest nights by international visitors (+8.0%).
The preliminary report for February 2017 finds that guest nights totaled 35.9 million (-2.6%), which comprised 30 million guest nights by Japanese travelers (-2.2%) and 5.8 million guest nights by international visitors (-4.5%).
International visitors’ guest nights in three major urban areas (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Aichi, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo) was up 9.6% to 3.41 million, and in the rest of local regions up 6.0% to 2.79 million. The growth rate in local regions was much lower than the year-round growth of 64.9% from January 2015.
The occupancy rates were 52.4% nationwide. The occupancy rate in Osaka was 76.2%, keeping 85% for resort hotels and 82.1% for city hotels.
