The latest survey on sustainable travel, conduced by Booking.com, finds that the ratio of travelers of 11 target countries with desires to stay in eco-friendly lodgings was 68%. The ratios were relatively high in China (93%), Brazil (83%) and Spain (80%), while it was just 39% in Japan, which was the lowest among 11 target countries.
Among Japanese, the top tolerable lodging service for sustainability was lower power consumption light (89%), followed by recycled toilet paper (87%) and AC working only when a guest is in a room (84%). Almost half of Japanese respondents answered ‘tolerable’ in lower exchange frequency of linens and towels (51%) and higher food cost due to local farm to table (49%).
Among all of the 11 target countries’ travelers, the ratios of lower exchange frequency of linens (75%) and higher food cost due to local farm to table (64%) were 10 to 20 higher points than those among Japanese.

Seventy-nine percent among all of the 11 target countries’ travelers answered that they are aware of eco-friendly transportation for traveling, and the ratio of Japanese travelers was 69%. The ratios of traveling by walk or bicycle as much as possible were 42% overall and 37% among Japanese travelers.
The survey targeted 1,000 or more travelers who had one or more travel experiences in 2016 and have one or more travel plans even in 2017 in each Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, U.K., U.S. and China.
