Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of Japanese travel consumption was up 131% year on year to 5.3 trillion JPY in the 3rd quarter of 2022, which improved from a 26.9% reduction in the previous quarter or a 20.3% reduction compared to the same quarter of 2019. The total consisted of 4.3 trillion JPY for overnight trips (down 21.6% over 2019) and 1.1 trillion JPY for day trips (down 14.7% over 2019).
The total number of travelers was up 90% year on year to 126 million, which were 25.6% fewer travelers than 2019. Overnight travelers were up 93.3% to 69.6 million (down 26.8% over 2019), and day travelers were up 86.2% to 56.5 million (down 24% over 2019).
Travel spending a traveler was up 21.6% year on year to 42,322 JPY, which were 7.1% more than even 2019. It was up 22.1% to 61,208 JPY for overnight trip (up 7.1% over 2019) and up 14.6% to 19,036 JPY for day trip (up 12.3% over 2019).
