Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of Japanese travel consumption was up 35.4% year on year to 2.2 trillion JPY in the first three months of 2022, which were 47.7% less than 2019. The total consisted of 1.7 trillion JPY for overnight trips (down 47.6% over 2019) and 502 billion JPY for day trips (down 47.8% over 2019).
The total number of travelers was up 22.2% year on year to 61 million, which were 49.2% fewer than 2019. Overnight travelers were up 29% to 34 million (down 47.1% over 2019), and day travelers were up 14.7% to 28 million (down 51.5% over 2019).
Travel spending a traveler was up 10.8% year on year to 35,879 JPY, which were 2.9% more than even 2019. It was up 4.6% to 50,194 JPY for overnight trip (down 1.0% over 2019) and up 19.4% to 18,254 JPY for day trip (up 7.5% over 2019).
