Yamanashi Prefecture gives up a Light Rail Transit system for ‘Mt.Fuji Railway Plan,’ changing to a rubber tire transportation system

Yamanashi Prefecture announced that it has given up a Light Rail Transit system for  ‘Mt.Fuji Railway Plan’ and instead will introduce rubber tire transportation system without rails as ‘Fuji Tram (preliminary name).’

Fuji Tram will be a new transportation system with merits of both train and bus, powered by environment-friendly green hydrogen. The track will be created by introducing a guidance system using magnetic markers and white lines, which is expected to regulate general car traffic under the track law and also to reduce construction and maintenance costs considerably compared to a LRT system.

Yamanashi Prefecture hammered out ‘Mt.Fuji Railway Plan’ in February 2021. Since then, the prefecture has discussed the plan with local residents many times because the plan is controversial.

Fuji Tram is expected to manage visitors to the fifth station of Mt.Fuji, a gateway to the summit for climbing and to connect to Fuji Five Lakes area and even new station of the Yamanashi Maglev Line in the future.
