Japan Tourism Agency announced that sales of 46 major travel companies increased by 284.1% year on year to 41.5 billion JPY in total in May 2021, but the result was still 90.2% lower than May 2019.
Sales in domestic travel were up 354.5% year on year to 37 billion JPY, but were down 84.9% over two years ago, worse than 74.8% in April. Sales in overseas travel were up 45.4% to 3.7 billion JPY (down 97.6% over two years ago), and sales in inbound travel up 831.6% to 614 million JPY (down 97.2% over two years ago) for inbound travel.
Sales of package tour products for domestic travel were down 88.3% to 9.6 billion JPY compared to May 2019, and customers were also down 89.5% to 276,734.
Among 46 travel companies, the top was JTB Group (9 companies) with sales of 17 billion JPY (down 87.9% over two year ago). HIS reduced sales by 96.8% to 1.1 billion JPY compared to two years ago because it largely relies on the overseas travel business.
