Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of guest nights in March 2023 (provisionally) was up 48.6% year on year to 49.7 million, which were down just 2.8% even compared to March 2019.
Out of the total, Japanese guest nights were up 26.3% year on year or 0.5% over March 2019 to 41.8 million, and international guest nights recovered to a 17% reduction to 7.9 million compared to March 2019.
The occupancy rate was 55.5% overall, higher than 53.4% in February 2023 and 7.9% lower than 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 37.4% for ryokans, 53.8% for resort hotels, 66.4% for budget hotels and 70.8% for city hotel.
In February 2023 (definitely), the total number of guest nights was down 5.5% to 41.1 million over 2019, out of which international guest nights were down 36.1% to 5.9 million. Prefectures having more guest nights than 2019 were Nara with 171,200 (up 19.5%), Tokyo with 6.6 million (up 16.1%), Tochigi with 667,100 (up 14.1%) and Kochi with 214,900 (up 11.4%).
The biggest international source market was South Korea, followed by Taiwan, Hong Kong, U.S. and China, all of which accounted for 63.1% of the total. Guest nights of travelers from U.S., Philippines, Indonesia and Canada exceeded those in March 2019.
