International arrivals in Japan totaled 1.9 million in May 2023 with more visitors from eight source markets than 2019

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors in Japan in May 2023 was 1,898,900, 31.5% fewer visitors than May 2019. The recovery trend continued even in the off-season after the cherry blossom months. 

The largest source market was still South Korea with 515,700 visitors(down 14.5% over 2019), followed by Taiwan with 303,300 visitors (down 28.9%), U.S. with 183,400 visitors (up 16.8%), Hong Kong with 154,400 visitors(down 18.3%), and China with 134,400 visitors (down 82.2%).

Arrivals from eight source markets of the U.S., Singapore, Vietnam, Canada, Indonesia, Middle East, Mexico and Germany exceeded those in May 2019. 

According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) recovered to a 32.7% decrease compared to May 2019. Haneda handled 3,805 flights in May 2023, more than 3,606 flights in the same month of 2019, and  available seats already recovered to 923,737, almost the same seats as 930,880 in May 2019.
