International visitors’ guest nights in Japan showed the first double-digit growth in April 2017 in the last year

The latest guest night statistics in Japan in March 2017 (the secondary report), announced by Japan Tourism Agency, finds that guest nights increased by 1.6% year on year to 42.7 million in total, which consisted of 36.8 million guest nights by Japanese travelers (+1.7%) and 5.9 million guest nights by international visitors (+0.8%). Guest nights by international visitors were record-high for March and almost tripped compared to March in 2007 The year-on-year growth of Japanese travelers’ guest nights was found for the first time since December 2015.

The preliminary report for April 2017 finds that guest nights totaled 41.1 million (+6.8%), which comprised 33 million guest nights by Japanese travelers (+4.8%) and 8.1 million guest nights by international visitors (+16.1%). The double-digit growth of international visitor’s guest nights was found for the first time since April 2016.

In March 2017, international visitors’ guest nights in three major urban areas (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Aichi, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo) were up 1.6%, and also the growth rate of 8.9% was found in Kyushu, as the year-on-year growths were found in Saga, Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima. 

The occupancy rates were 61.8% nationwide. The occupancy rate in Osaka was 84.1%, keeping 90% for city hotels and 86.7% for budget hotels.
