Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in November 2024 reached record-high 3,187,000 for November, 30.5% more than the same month in 2019. The numbers for the first 11 months totaled 33.4 million visitors, already exceeding the annual record of 31.9 million in 2019.
The total number in 2024 is expected to reach 39 million or more if the growth pace continues.
The largest source market was South Korea with 749,500 visitors (up 265.5% over 2019), followed by China with 546,300 (down 27.3%), Taiwan with 488,400 visitors (up 24.6%), U.S. with 247,500 visitors (up 66.1%), Hong Kong with 227,100 visitors (up 13.7%).
Visitors from South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam and France already exceeded the annual records.
According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in November 2024 were 20,539, 1.2% fewer flights than November 2019, and available seats decreased by 0.7% to 4,812,009 compared to November 2019.
Haneda handled 32% more flights (4,625) and 25.7% more available seats (1,142,903) than November 2019. Fukuoka also increased flights by 27.2% to 1,817 and available seats by 38.1% to 402,884.
Sapporo recovered to a 0.7% increase in flights and a 2.8% decrease in available seats.
