Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of Japanese guest nights in February 2022 was up 34.4% year on year to 23.4 million, which were 31.7% fewer guests nights than the same month in 2019. International guest nights were up 10.9% over 2020 or down 97.5% over 2019 to 230,000. The total was up 34.1% over 2020 or down 45.7% over 2019 to 23.6 million.
The occupancy rate was 34.5% overall, 27.4 lower points than 2019. By type of accommodation, city hotel particularly struggled with a 46.4 points decrease in occupancy rate due to loss of international guests. The occupancy rates were 19.7% for ryokan, 26.3% for resort hotel, 45% for budget hotel and 32.6% for city hotel.
Top three prefectures were Tokyo with 3.5 million guest nights (down 38.1% over 2019), Hokkaido with 1.9 million guest nights (down 40.7% over 2019) and Osaka with 1.8 million guest nights (down 47.7% over 2019).
Growths in guest nights in comparison with two year ago were seen in Kochi with 11.9% up.
