Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of Japanese guest nights in December 2022 (provisionally) was up 5.8% year on year to 41 million, which were down 8.3% even compared to December 2019. The growth clearly resulted from no travel restriction in the New Year’s holiday period.
International guest nights were up 1695.8% year on year to 5.9 million, boosted by open of the border on October 11 2022. Compared to the same month 2019, the reduction rate recovered to 35%.
The total was up 20% over 2021 or down 0.2% over 2019 to 47 million guest nights.
The occupancy rate was 53.7% overall, lower than 57.4% in November 2022 and 5% lower than 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 36.8% for ryokans, 51.9% for resort hotels, 63.4% for budget hotels and 67.4% for city hotel.
In November 2022 (definitely), the total number of guest nights was up 24.8% over 2021 or down 7.2% over 2019 to 46.1 million. Top three prefectures were Tokyo with 6.4 million guest nights (down 3.8% over 2019), Osaka with 3.5 million guest nights (down 11.9% over 2019) and Hokkaido with 2.5 million guest nights (down 0.3% over 2019) .
The prefectures with more guest nights than 2019 were Aomori (up 4.5%), Tochigi (up 10%), Kanagawa (up 6.0%), Yamanashi (up 1.2%), Nagano (up 2.1%), Kyoto (up 2.7%), Hyogo (up 3.5%), Yamaguchi (up 24.8%), Ehime (up 4.1%) and Nagasaki (up 13.6%).
