JTB forecasts Japanese travelers are expected to be up 2.9% to 320 million in 2025, while international visitors be up 8.9% to 40 million

JTB has forecasted that the number of Japanese travelers in 2025 is expected to increase by 2.9% year on year to 319 million in total, which consist of 305 million domestic travelers (up 2.7%) and 14 million overseas travelers (up 8.5%). International visitors to Japan are estimated at 402 million, 8.9% more visitors than 2024, and more visitors than the forecast are expected depending on the visa deregulation for China. 

Domestic travel expenses may rise

The average domestic travel expenses are estimated at 47,800 yen per traveler, 25.5% more than 2024 because of rise of prices, and the total domestic travel expenses may reach 14.6 trillion yen, 3.8% more than 2024 or 13.2% more than 2019. 

According to the questionary survey about how many times you plan to travel for one or more nights in Japan in 2025, the most answers were found in ‘one time (28.3%),’ followed by ‘two times (20.5%),’ ‘three times (11.2%)’ and ‘four or more times (14.5%).’ By age, the most active domestic travelers were found in ’29 years old or younger females (86.5%),’ followed by ‘30s females (81.2%).’ 

On the contrary, the ratio of people who answered ‘no domestic travel plan’ was 25.4%, and the reasons were ‘no enough budget (35.4%),’ ‘higher travel expenses than expected (23.4%)’ and ‘no interest in traveling (14.6%.’ 

Higher intention to overseas travel is seen in young people in big cities

JTB has forecasted that the number of Japanese overseas travelers will not reach 20 million, the level of 2019, yet. The average overseas travel expenses are estimated at 334,100 yen, 40.9% more than 2019, and the total expenses are expected to increase by 15.2% year on year to 4.7 trillion yen. 

According to the questionary survey, 21% answered that they plan to travel overseas in 2025. By age, the most active overseas travelers were found in ’29 years old or younger (34.3%),’ followed by ’29 years old or younger (27.5%)’ and ‘30s males (26.0%).’ By area, 24.5% in Kanto area said they have plan to travel abroad, and 22.6% in Kinki area. 

The ratio of people who answered ‘no overseas travel plan’ was 78.9%, and the main reasons were ‘higher travel expenses than expected (33.6%)’ and ‘no enough budget (26.4%).’
