JTB forecasts that Japanese travelers will reduce by 7% during this coming Golden Week holiday period, despite a 10% increase in outbound travelers

JTB has forecasted that the total number of Japanese travelers during this coming Golden Week holiday period (April 25 to May 7 2025) will reduce by 6.9% year on year to 23.5 million, and the total amount of travel consumption also reduce by 3.9% to 985.5 billion yen. 

Domestic travelers are estimated to reduce by 7.2% to 22.9 million, while the average travel cost is up 1.4% to 36,660 yen per traveler due to rise in prices. Destinations are diversified, and long trips using railways or flights are relatively preferred. 

The most-chosen travel days are 1 night and 2 days, but the ratio is down 4.3 points to 33.5%, while the ratio of 3 nights and 4 days is up 2.7 points to 19.8%. The ratio of 3 nights or longer is up 5.5 points.

Regarding travel cost per traveler, 18.6% plan to spend 20,000 yen to 30,000 yen, and 17.1% 40,000 yen to 50,000 yen. The ratio of 50,000 yen or more is up 4.6 points. 

Japanese outbound travelers are forecasted to increase by 10% year on year to 550,000 (45.2% down compared to 2019), and the average travel cost is down 0.4% to 268,000 yen per traveler. The total travel consumption is estimated at 147.4 billion yen, 9.6% more than a year ago. 

Selected destinations are polarized to short-haul destinations, such as Korea or Taiwan and long-haul destinations, such as Europe or North America. 

The most-chosen travel days are 3 nights and 4 days (29.2%), followed by 2 nights and 3 days (14.2%) and 5 nights and 6 days (14.2%). The ratio of 4 nights and 5 days is up 3.9 points. 

15.9% plan to spend 100,000 yen to 150,000 yen, and 15% 70,000 yen to 100,000 yen.
