Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) announced that the sales of the 48 major Japanese travel agents amounted to 352.4 billion JPY in December 2019, 3.0% less than a year earlier. The monthly total consisted of 130.4 billion JPY for the outbound travel business (+0.1%), 14 billion JPY for the inbound travel business (-1.8%) and 208 billion JPY for the domestic travel business (-1.8%).
The outbound travel market was still affected by the political turmoil in Hong Kong particularly, and the domestic travel market was damaged from shortage of snow for skiing products. In the inbound travel market, visitors from Europe, U.S. and Australia, but visitors from South Korea continued declining.
The sales of package tour brand products totaled 101.4 billion JPY (-5.1%) with 2,444,268 customers (-10.9%) in December 2019. The breakdown was 32.9 billion JPY (-0.3%) with 146,636 customers (-7.3%) for the outbound travel business, 68.2 million JPY (-7.2%) with 2,273,060 customers (-11.2%) for the domestic travel business and 335 million JPY (-14.2%) with 35,703 customers (-1.4%) for the inbound travel business.
